How to Burn Copal

With charcoal: Place a heat-safe incense burner on a stable surface. Light a charcoal disc and allow it to heat until it begins to ash over. Add a small piece or pinch of Copal resin on top. The resin will melt and release its fragrant smoke. Add more a little at a time as needed.

For cleansing a space: Carefully carry your heat-safe burner through the room, allowing the smoke to move throughout the space. Pay special attention to doorways, windows, corners, altars, and areas that feel spiritually heavy. Set your intention, pray, or speak what you are clearing and what you are welcoming into the space.

For altar or spiritual work: Burn a small amount during prayer, offerings, ancestor work, meditation, or divination to cleanse the atmosphere and create a sacred environment.

Helpful Tip

A little Copal goes a long way. Start with a small amount and add more as needed. Open a window or provide ventilation when burning resin indoors.
